The role of the Senior Medical Scientist- Microbiology is to carry out the analyses of the diagnostic microbiology laboratory. The post holder will work in collaboration with the Consultant Microbiologists, Laboratory Management, Chief Medical Scientist, Clinical Scientists and laboratory staff.
Duties will include:
- Participate in the development of a Laboratory Service that supports the needs of healthcare professionals and their patients and is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the Laboratory.
- Take part in the clinical microbiology diagnostic service, in collaboration with Consultant Microbiologists and Laboratory Management team, to ensure patient results are delivered to the highest standard in a timely manner.
- Participate and discharge duties required to provide operational services within a multi-disciplinary laboratory/team.
- Participate in the maintenance of the ISO 15189 quality management system which ensures safe patient care.
- Maintain professional competency to work in accordance with the laboratory management system and act impartially and ethically in the discharge of duties.
- Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient information.
- Discharge duties in accordance with laboratory policies and be responsible for the quality of that work.
- Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities within the organisation.
- Encourage professional development of staff, through promoting self-learning, formal courses, or formal and/or informal on the job training.
- Develop, update and review policies, procedures and guidelines for the department.
- Promote good communication within the team.
- Participate in developing and leading the introduction of new ideas and methods aligned to strategic objectives of the organisation.
- Take part in validation and verifications of equipment and tests.
- Participate in costing methods for laboratory service to service users.
- Monitor and interpret quality, standards, accuracy of results, and participate in troubleshooting to resolve abnormalities, anomalies and variations in results.
- Actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance programmes and co-operate in evaluating assays, equipment and consumables where required.
- Comply with Health and Safety requirements as detailed in the Safety Statement and associated policies and procedures and to report any defects or tasks being carried out in an unsafe manner.
- Any other duties as may be assigned by a member of the Laboratory Management team.
Qualifications & Experience:
- CORU or HCPC registration is essential.
- BSc allied to the field of clinical science and laboratory medicine.
- Strong technical experience working in clinical microbiology
- Eligible for membership of the ACSLM.
- Have previous experience in a clinical diagnostic laboratory (at least 3 years).
- Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff.
- Accuracy and attention to detail are essential.
- Experience using automated microbiology systems is an advantage
- Experience using Vitek 2XL or Vitek Prime is an advantage
- Knowledge of Laboratory Accreditation (ISO15189)
