A leading European financial institution is seeking an Associate Legal Counsel to provide legal and regulatory support for its Global Markets Division (GMD) in Tokyo. This role involves advising on capital markets transactions, regulatory compliance, and dispute resolution, while collaborating with internal teams and external legal advisors. You will play a key role in ensuring the bank's legal strategy aligns with both Japanese and international financial regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal support for capital markets transactions, including ISDA/CSA, GMRA/GMSLA agreements, and Japanese law repos.
- Assist Compliance teams in interpreting and applying local and international regulations impacting the bank's business.
- Manage and oversee external legal counsel, ensuring strategic alignment with the bank's interests.
- Handle capital markets-related dispute resolution and contribute to the bank's legal strategy and business planning.
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments and advise the business on necessary actions.
- Support other business divisions on legal matters as directed by the Head of Legal, Japan.
- Report functionally to the APAC Regional Head of GML and hierarchically to the Head of GML, Japan.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Qualifications:
- Japanese-qualified lawyer or foreign-qualified lawyer with relevant experience.
Experience:
- Financial services sector experience, preferably in capital markets law.
Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities.
- Team-oriented, bright, and highly motivated professional.
Language Requirements
- Japanese: Native (required for legal documentation and client interactions).
- English: Fluent (for internal and international communication).
Preferred Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in regulatory compliance within financial services.

- Ability to work across multiple jurisdictions and regulatory frameworks.
